2002.08.30 This week's FridayFive...
1. What's your favorite piece of clothing that you currently
own?
I guess I'd have to say my black gauzy shirt. It has done me well
this summer with all the heat and humidity down here.
2. What piece of clothing do you most want to acquire?
I want
THIS shirt.
3. What piece of clothing can you not bring yourself to get
rid of? Why?
My "You only wish...you could play like a girl" shirt
because it reminds me of the good times of playing with my last
hockey team (and I emphasize that there were very few "good
times"). Somehow it acquired some holes and it looks really
scummy, but I probably won't ever throw it out. I also have some
tshirts that don't fit me any more from when I was a teen...shirts
featuring the Specials and Madness...you just can't get shirts like
that anymore. They are put away in a box
4. What piece of clothing do you look your best in?
To be honest, I am pretty low maintenance when it comes to the way
I look. I'm not the sort of person who tries on every single pair
of pants in her closet and gripes about how fat I look in them.
5. What has been your biggest fashion accident?
Hmm...well I went through a lot of phases in my life. When I was
in grade 7 and 8 I did the Madonna thing (circa Borderline). Highschool
it was the mohawk/shaved head/combat boots and kilt thing (hell,
it was the 80s). I guess, according to some, I have ALWAYS been
a fashion accident, but I put on what I feel like putting on (or
truthfully, I just grab the cleanest article of clothing closest
to my reach).
Have a good Labour Day weekend!
2002.08.29 I'm going to do last week's FridayFive
because, well, this week's isn't out yet (and I'm impatient).
1. What is your current occupation? Is this what you chose
to be doing at this point in your life? Why or why not?
Currently I am a freelance web designer. Heck, I thought I would
have succeeded in taking over the world right now! No, seriously,
I love what I do and as long as the jobs are lined up, I'm all good.
The money is great and I actually LIKE getting up for work...mind
you, I don't have to commute anywhere (not usually anyways) and
I can "go to work" in my pjs for all it matters.
2. If time/talent/money were no object, what would your dream
occupation be?
Dang, that's a pretty rough question to answer. I would definately
live somewhere where I can have a yard and there is more than a
few feet between each town. I'd probably be doing the same thing
I do now, but maybe I'd have a nicer computer. I always envied that
lady on the DeVry commercial that is "working" on her
computer and looks out her french doors to her horses in the pasture.
I want to be THAT lady.
3. What did/do your parents do for a living? Has this had
any influence on your career choices?
My Dad wears a suit in a factory in my hometown. He just got some
promotion not too long ago so I'm not sure what, exactly, he does.
I know that when he was in HR and I mentioned that I thought it
would be a good idea for me to take a post grad in HR Management
(for reasons strictly economical), he said I would hate it. I don't
know if that means HE hates it or not, but he was right. I couldn't
do that. He was a drummer in a band when he was younger, and then
he had a family so he had to go and get a "real job".
He worked his way up to the suits from the factory floor, so I have
a lot of respect for him. He always wanted me to get into a job
where I can express my creativity. I have never been one to follow
in anyone's footsteps. My Dad always encouraged me to do
what I felt was best for me.
4. Have you ever had to choose between having a career and
having a family?
Nope. I recently got married and although children are not in the
picture for the near future, my job is such that even if I get a
job in a design firm, I could easily go back to freelancing.
5. In your opinion, what is the easiest job in the world?
What is the hardest? Why?
That's a tough one. I definately agree with Thursday
that every job has it's frustrations (and I don't have the patience
to be frustrated). I found the actual sales part of retail sales
easy. Manipulation comes easily for me and I'm a great sales person.
This doesn't mean I LIKE to do it. The hardest job? I would say
I would not want to be a professional hockey player or an actor
or someone in the spotlight like that. The pressure must be immense!
Everyone wants a piece of you (in any way you can imagine), you
always have to be "on" whether the public personna is
something natural to you, or fabricated by the powers that be (agents,
fans, the press...). Sure, they get compensated, sometimes WAY too
much, but they have to give up EVERYTHING. I grumble about having
to walk to the gym (cute huh?) or having to go to the grocery store.
Imagine not being ABLE to do that? Or if you DID decide you wanted
to go pick up a pint of Ben and Jerry's, you are bombarded with
strangers trying to touch you, get your picture taken with them,
have you sign things...and then knowing that at least one of them
is going online somewhere and recounting the entire run-in with
you, adding to the tale for interest. Thanks, but I'll pass.
